Here are the problems (initially)

The old site hit a wall at 5. (Because of the infamous unupgradeable book review module.

So. I need some advice on Installing 7.8 and being able to link back to the rest of the content As I am told it is next to impossible to import back in.

I need to know how to set up the new install on the same domain, directory, etc, without having any issues.

Any thoughts here? I'd like to start off in a direction that won't foul everything up.

I do have experience of putting D7 in root directory, and D6 in a subfolder (which can of course be rewritten from mysite.com/subfolder to subdomain.mysite.com). It worked fine.

However, I assume you want to keep the old URLs unchanged. Whether you can have both sites appearing to use URLs with mysite.com as base URL is beyond me. If not, and the new site gets the base URL, you may end up with permanent redirects for the old URLs, I look forward to someone answering the question definitively.
