The primary term should be available as a token so custom_breadcrumb can use it, pathauto can use it, etc.

I posted a Primary Term patch providing token.module support at http://drupal.org/node/160382. It's not committed yet but as I'm the (unsuspecting :-) new owner of this module, I'm guessing it will be soon.
