Gmail style webmail using Mailhandler?

spooky69 - March 20, 2007 - 23:37

It would be really great to have a nice simple webmail system for a Drupal site. I wonder if a combination of a new content type being created for mail, combined with Mailhandler (?) and maybe some Ajax could create a webmail sytem, perhaps as simply as using the comments threads to store emails and thus keep threads together as done so nicely by Gmail.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how this could be done or if there would be a relatively painless way to do something like this?

roundcube

The "roundcube webmail integration" module for Drupal does exactly that: integrates the open source RoundCube Webmail Project into Drupal. Although the project is still in a beta state, it's pretty powerful and flexible.

Pontomail Webmail Client

You might also have a look at Pontomail Webmail Client. It's a Drupal module and not a wrapper module for a 3rd party application.

If you want to use Drupal 4.7...

rcmail module is currently

spooky69 - March 23, 2007 - 09:41

rcmail module is currently not working for Drupal 5.1 and the developer appears to not have the time to correct this - I had it working on Drupal 5, updated to 5.1 and it stopped working.

pontomail is no good for Drupal 5 and appears in an arrested state of development.

cPanel was excellent but not working on Drupal 5 (for creation of email accounts).

So, at present - nothing available.

Again, I would have thought that a gMail style module, especially with automation of email account creation via cPanel, would be a very popular and useful module. It occurred to me that mailhandler could be useful in the creation of this (although I could of course be entirely wrong about that).

Thanks for the responses above, but does anyone else have any ideas?

I'm in the same situation. I

I'm in the same situation. I would have put 4.7 instead of the 5.1 if I new :D

Anybody have any news on a webmail module for drupal?

Update

spooky69 - March 27, 2007 - 15:29

Ok, so rcmail is now working for 5.1 (thanks for the efforts to assist Stefan).

Still cpanel seems to have been deserted, and who wants to manually add new email addresses for all new site members?

I still wonder if there is some mileage in mailhandler being used for this. We already have the ability to send by smtp as a user of a drupal site - no big shakes to save the sent message as a new comment to the mailbox content type perhaps? Incoming message via mailhandler could add a comment (like forum structure), thus giving a flow and connection between sent and received messages (threaded) and giving that gmail potential? Bit of ajax and styling.... I also think it would be important to have automatic creation of email address (cpanel can sort of do this if updated to 5 and then altered a bit) - perhaps choose user types that automatically get an email address, allowing either all members or specific defined membership levels or roles to automatically get assigned an email address.

Or am I completely off the planet with this idea?

I thought that this might be of interest. Does anyone have any information on how to set up automatic site email account provision and access? I presume that a Drupal site must have had this created at some point?

ZK based email client

nehalmehta - April 7, 2007 - 12:26

Hello,

we are already developing zk based webmail client.... for more information on ZK u can look at www.zkoss.org... ZK was most downloaded stuff on sf. With our drupal expertise I think we can easily interface it with drupal comments.. ZK mail is somewhat on the lines of Yahoo beta or gmail.... I am very much interested in doing interface of our ZK mail (open source webmail client) with drupal but we are getting short of time.. So if anybody is interested in doing that then can provide all guidelines to do that... If somebody wants it to be get done by payment then also can find out way to do that.....

So if anybody is interested to develop interface by own please let me know I will be happy to help out.... Indeed its very exciting idea..

Hi Nehal, I was hoping to

spooky69 - April 7, 2007 - 15:41

Hi Nehal,

I was hoping to find something that could be a module rather than an integration. Roundcube is working as an integration and is ok, although it still requires admin to set up email accounts for users manually. I would love to have something as 'simple' as gmail in terms of style and functionality for Drupal, with automatic creation of accounts..... Would still be interested in seeing zk mail though (could not see it on the site you mentioned).

ZK is not our technology

nehalmehta - April 7, 2007 - 18:46

Hello,

hey www.zkoss.org is not our site...ZK is just wrapper for AJAX... We have not developed ZK but using ZK technology. we are developing mail client using ZK... We will upload it soon on sf... If you want to see demo of ZKmail just let me know will PM u link as it is still in development phase.... If you want to develop whole module for ur site then let me know.. As with zk(ajax) and drupal expertise I think we will be are appropriately set to develop required module...

spooky69 - April 9, 2007 - 17:23

I would be interested to see how the project is developing. I presume that you would have no problem with the code being adapted to provide a proper module instead of simply integrating your webmail product, as integration is already achieved with roundcube.

We can working together?

namnv - October 4, 2008 - 03:28

Nehal,

I'm very interesting to develope a mail client using ZK, can you help me to do this with your experience? I can't find out the source code or doanload package of zkmail.
