The attached patch introduces a new option to disable clearing additional content. Instead the css class "error" will be added to the field when the limit is reached. By default the additional content is still cleared, but it can be disabled per field.
It could be easily extensible to add user defined css classes if needed.

The Drupal 6 version of Maxlength is no longer supported so I'm marking this Closed (works as designed).

I also encourage you, if you haven't already, to upgrade your site to Drupal 8/9. We are actively maintaining that version and you would enjoy all of the other features of the latest version of Drupal.
