Groups are generally meant to be around forever, so a group that is focused on a specific event in a specific year seems like the wrong use of groups.

Any reason this can't be an event node?

I always thought of groups as a way to have multiple users share, conserve and discuss around a specific subject. So that the discussions are reaching the intended audience (the group here) and are structured around the subject in a "container".

Nice idea about creating an event node for this. I will do that, but that would really only be fit for announcing the event and not for engaging users in contribution and related discussions :-/

So for the purpose of having a month long contribution sprint, getting everybody to share what they are upto etc. I thought a new group be right. Does it still seam like the wrong use of groups?

I think a group is right where discussions around this event belong, but yes, after reading your comment I think the group type should be a 'event planning' and not a 'working group'. An event planning group by default would be focused on a specific event and a time.

I see a page not found on the group node that I had created - http://groups.drupal.org/node/180224
Should I go ahead with creating the group again with the correct type (event planning) so that it gets approved?

And another thought.. How about the group does not focus on Contribution only during this one month sprint, but exists around forever to bring together Drupalers from India region and houses contribution related discussions, collaborations, sharing etc?

Here's an idea:

1. Create the group
2. Create an event node announcing the event, post that to relevant groups including the one you propose to create
3. Create a wiki page to discuss any plans, post to similar groups

In the event node encourage people to join the group for the sprint.

We can see based on that how useful/important the group will be to the planning process.

Be sure the group name and description follow the guidelines for groups.
