I'm learning about Drupal via the Mercer book, and already hit an installation problem because I downloaded 5.1 rather than the 4.7.n that the book relates to. I've now got 5.1 working, but am I likely to hit other significant inconsistencies? And if I start again, with 4.7, will it be easy to upgrade later? Will I be losing much functionality by downgrading?

I don't have the Mercer book (I have Robert Douglass's), so I don't know how hard this will be, but I'd recommend sticking with 5.1 if possible. If you look at the release announcements and stuff for Drupal 5, you'll see that there are a lot of nice enhancements in the user interface that will make it more pleasant to use. A lot of the developer-level stuff is quite similar to 4.7 (as I understand it), so anything on that level the book covers should be pretty close.

That said, you could use a 4.7 install to go through the book and learn how Drupal works, then move up to 5.x later. There's certainly no shame in that. :)
