I have attempted a backport of this module. The attached patch works to add a box and select the view to display.

What still needs to be done here is getting the view settings/options to be work - currently that appears to heavily rely on the new ajax stuff in D7.

Drupal 7 has been officially released for going on a year now. I'd highly recommend spending the time to look at migrating your site to Drupal 7 as a more worthwhile investment of time than backporting features. For my own website with about 500 pages, I've decided to build a new Drupal 7 from the ground up rather than moving my D6 site over. This way I can take advantage of new features within D7 and configure the site more easily. I am just copying and pasting content and re-uploading the graphics. If you have a lot of users and comments that cannot be moved, then look at upgrading the site normally, then configuring your new features within D7 once you get there.

I would also strongly advocate switching over to Drupal 7 at this point, I doubt we'll be doing any work to port this back to D6 ourselves. I'll leave it open for now should anyone feel like continuing work on this.
