It would be nice if the number of values limit of fields is respected by the Javascript run time, so that the user(s) don't get barked at all the way at the end after filling out the form by selecting too many options.

I agree. Don't allow more items to be added when the limit is reached.

multiselect-7.x-1.8 is no longer supported, because Drupal 7 is no longer supported.

Can you confirm if this is still an issue in multiselect-2.0.0-beta4?
