If uploading via a node, where does the file go?

In filestore2 (and I'm in Drupal 4.5.0 version) if in the 'default workflow' section (./admin/node/configure/defaults) you enable the 'attach file' function then when creating content you are presented with the option to upload a file.

However, if you do then the file does not appear to actually get uploaded anywhere. For example, if you purport to upload a file via a blog entry, everything appears to work. If you then go to your file download area the blog will be listed with all of the other file downloads but there is no 'download' link associated with the entry. Apparently the taxonomy slots it there but no file is associated with it and in fact there is no file on the server. I've scouted it with FTP.

What am I missing?
