Commercial modules?

modul - March 26, 2007 - 06:41

I still haven't exhausted the multitude of open-source modules here on drupal.org, and I don't think I soon will. But I was wondering: aren't there any commercial modules for Drupal available? Is there a collection or a directory of them somewhere? Or isolated examples of commercial modules?

Still looking. Does anyone

Still looking. Does anyone know of any commercial Drupal modules?

Ludo

Here is an isolated example: http://drupal.org/project/userpoints (I have not used it myself.)

Surprizing... Drupal is so

Surprizing... Drupal is so highly acclaimed, used by so many organizations and institutions. Has there really been nobody (except the lone example given here) who wrote commercial modules for this big market??? Mind you: I'm not encouraging this at all, I'm just interested to know what's available - if anything.

Hi Ludo, It "seems" to me

Hi Ludo,

It "seems" to me that all commercial Drupal business is based on website development. I'm assuming that these businesses would have their own modules, blocks, code, themes, graphics etc that they use for their own projects but don't resell them.

It is an interesting question why there are no commercial modules for Drupal since it is quiet common in Joomla.

Maybe the current high quality of Drupal modules negates any advantage of commercial alternatives?
Maybe Drupal developers are more sharing ... (and see the long term benefits of Open Source) ? ;)
Maybe Drupal (at least in the past) has been used by more technically competent people who don't mind getting their hands a little dirty to get modules to work together?
Maybe Joomla has a larger user base with more potential customers for successful commercial modules?

So Ludo ... do you have some ideas for commercial module(s)?

Business model

Commercial modules are a shaky business model as Drupal and Joomla! modules have to be GPL (http://www.joomla.org/content/view/3510/1/).

Each image effect is free for non-commercial use or £15 - £25 for commercial use (per website).

The tools are particularly useful for ecommerce sites.

Out of curiosity, what did

No_Idea_Yet - July 12, 2008 - 15:16

Out of curiosity, what did your lawyer say about the licence for your modules?

As I understand it, your licence isn't legally binding and anyone could redistribute them for free - then again, I have been wrong once or twice :)
