Do I need to disable "Access content" for this to work? I have enabled "access own" for a few content types, but if I go to a taxonomy list page I can still see other user's content as an authenticated user.
The documentation is unclear of how exactly this works. Does "access own" also deny access to things that are not your own? What if I enable "access any" and "access own" for a given content type and role? Am I supposed to do either/or or is there something I'm not understanding?

Geocef commentedAfter enabling View Own Module and setting the permission, go to Administer > Post Settings > Click on Rebuild Permissions. Or use this url "yourdomain/admin/content/node-settings". After rebuilding permissions the problem will be solved.
Please make sure on the permissions page you grant a particular role to view own content but not any content. And do not grant authenticated users role to view any content since this will allow all authenticated users to automatically access any content
