Could I use Drupal for company intranet? (It's that or MOSS2007)
ChrisFilter - March 27, 2007 - 14:40
Hi All,
Have been tasked with taking our Intranet up several hundred notches. I want to get to the stage where everyone in the company (100+) use it day in day out, and turn to it first if they don't know an answer to something.
Features that would be useful are:
Forums
Document Management and versioning
Colour schemes for each dept
Forms (though to what extent I don't know, I want to get as much as I can from a feature)
Needs to be very, very secure
Remote access should also be very, very secure (RSA key?)
Possible mobile web version
I have the option of using MOSS2007 but I've heard good things about Drupal. Are there any Drupal developers in London? Anyone want some work?!
Thanks,
Chris

I use Drupal for a company
I use Drupal for a company Extranet/Intranet and have been very pleased with it, however i've never heard of Moss2007. There is core forum functionality and the webform module seems very promising if you need to track web form submissions. The Versioning and Docment Management is a little weak, but I don't know if a module has been developed since I last looked (I don't need this functionality). I don't have comments on your security requirements because I choose not to put confidential information on our Drupal site, but I do know there are access control and security modules out there. What you need to do is fiddle with both and choose the platform that can fit you best. When I was researching CMS systems I tried over a dozen before settling on Drupal.
MOSS2007 stands for
MOSS2007 stands for Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007..
Thanks for the response!
Depends...
Tricky one this, Chris!
The most important thing here is probably to write a very thorough brief, then ask experts on each system whether that system is up to the tasks on that.
Drupal will (seemingly) do pretty much anything, but it's a standalone system. MOSS integrates (from what I've heard) very well with MS Office etc, so if you're running that as well, that's something to take into consideration. If you were (for example) to be setting up a new online business site with many users and ecommerce etc, I would say Drupal as its flexibility is great. MOSS can be told to churn out decent (standards based) code - again "from what I hear" - although apparently MS have been knocking out some dire ones with it. Sadly I don't have any dirt on that to show you.
If you couldn't give a monkey's about integration etc, Drupal is cool, but remember it's open source (which has pro's and con's) and the buck for support and upgrades etc stops with you.
As for your features, the list is nowhere near exhaustive enough to fully recommend Drupal for your needs or not. Bear in mind, I'm not a proper "expert" with this system (yet), however...
Forums are in there, but they're not fully featured a la phpBB.
Versioning is in there - not fully sure what you mean by document management though. You can have a WYSIWYG editor and save drafts etc...?
Colour blah etc - yup, done - theming is (initially) a swine, though, and should not be dismissed as simple "web design"
Forms - your comment is not very clear. You can create webforms and store/send stuff that has been input using a 3rd party module. The CCK module allows you to create your own node (content) types, this is really powerful stuff.
Security - you'll need to have a dedicated or virtual dedicated server most likely as most hosting companies run php in a shared mode of some description, which is cack for security. If you're using SSL tunneling you should be sweet though, but again look at dedi or VDS for speed etc.
Remote access - pretty much see above (I'm not totally clear on the security concerns but I think this is the gist of it)
Mobile version - should be fine as long as you know how to "sniff" for every device type that your staff/users are sporting. If they're all using company devices, you're laughing (hopefully running opera mobile, pIE is a bit naff) - security on that front though, could be a different issue.
Hope that helps. I'd actually come and say hello and see what's what, as I'm in the City tomorrow, but I'm freakishly busy.
Come to a London meetup
Come along to the next Drupal London meetup and meet potential developers for your job face to face:

Definitely!
We've been using and deploying Drupal for several company intranets now and so far, we're happy. We recommend using the cck and views module for custom databases you need to keep in the intranet. The Book module is also useful for making employee manuals and other stuff! Good luck!

Turns out our sister company is a big advocate of Drupal!
I think, however, having writtena func spec, that we'll have to head down the MOSS2007 route. Shame, as I do prefer going open source.
Many thanks for everyone's response.
Chris
It's a shame
Hi Chris,
Thank you for the update. It would be nice to keep you as an active member in the Drupal community at least :)
