It looks like a permissions issue, but having read a lot of posts around this issue, and having tried a few things, I am baffled. I can set the colour change options in the Garland theme configuration, and the preview image relects my changes, but the site does not change. I can see the colors directory that has been created, but I can't change the permissions because I don't have permissions to do so (assuming this is the cause).

Given that this is the default theme, surely there must be some definitive advice about how to address this issue - it is clear that I am far from alone in struggling with this.

And anyway why not fix this from the get go, rather than annoy and potentially turn off several thousand users? Perhaps I'm missing something obvious here? If so let me apologise now, but I'd dearly love to have this excellent feature work for me.

Any clear advice would be most welcome.

Regards
Graham

I have suffered from this. My understanding is that it occurs on a fresh install if YOU dont create the files folder BEFORE you first log in to your drupal site. If Drupal finds files folder is not there IT will create it - then you have problems. Try creating a new fresh drupal install - immediatly create a files folder and prove that the problem does not happen on this new site.

As for how you sort it once drupal HAS created the folder - I also would love a definitive answer

This is correct. I had the same problem, so I recreated my files folder, dropped the database (after taking a backup), and reran install.php. After that, the color selection worked perfectly. It also created a number of files in the files/color subfolder.

However, after restoring the database, the problem returned, so something must be missing there. I'll try to find what it is and post it here if I have found it.

I have exactly the same problem. Previews fine but cannot make change for site. Much appreciated if someone can suggest a solution.

manually delete the files folder, then recreate the files folder on your server with the proper permission, 777 or 775 755 may work as well, these depend on what your host allows.
