admin/settings/crowd under the user account settings, it gives you the option to auto assign roles. When I have a new user login no role is assigned despite choosing an option in the admin screen. While looking at the code, the system variable crowd_auto_assigned_role is not referenced anywhere in crowd.module. Will provide a patch in the next few days.

Given that this issue is about 1.5 years old, and given that I'm confident this issue is fixed in the 6.x-2.x branch (there were a number of group mapping issues there that were recently addressed), I'm going to close this. If anyone feels that's an error, and that a fix needs to be targeted specifically to the 6.x-1.x branch, please feel-free to re-open.
