From the description of the module it seems it is very similar to Mass Contact module.

Could you describe any differences / advantages of this module over Mass Contact module?

From looking at the mass contact page, I see no substantial difference with the exception of probably two things:

1. Mass contact allows you to opt-out, Mail2al does not. This is very important since I'm sending to my users important information and I don't want to give the users the option to not receive my message. I don't know if Mass contact allows you to do this or not.

2. Potentially, it is possible to take an email field from all nodes of some content type and create a list using those emails to send a message. (it's not implemented yet but is one of the things I want to do).

I'll be trying Mass Contact definitely to see if there is really any reason for this module to exist. Mail2all is new and Mass contact is used by 4000+ sites so there is no reason to compete here unless is justified.

I spent all afternoon testing the Mass Contact module, trying to configure it so I can replace my own module. The result, I'm keeping mine. Two big reasons come to the top of my mind.

  1. Being able to use Mime mail is a must for me. I use nice HTML mails and Mass Contact (at least the 6.x version) is not compatible.
  2. I just added a functionality where you can select roles to send the mail and you don't have to create categories so I think is easier that Mass Contact.

But if Mass Contact works with Mime Mail in the 7.x version (I didn't tested that one), there is no point in porting this module.

Thank you for your comments and for taking the time to compare with the Mass Contact module.

Regarding the purpose of Mime Mail, if the purpose is to send emails formatted in html, you can do this in the Mass Contact module by installing the wysiwyg module so that you have a wysiwyg editor for the body of the message.

I spent all afternoon trying to do that but I had no success. After reading a few issues, I found out that Mass Contact has no support for Mime Mail, I even looked at the code and saw that all mime mail code was commented.

Maybe there's a trick to configure it, as I said, it was really hard, time consuming and I couldn't make it work.

Mail2all does have support for Mime Mail and it's really easy to configure, it's just a matter of creating an input format, configure the wysiwyg for that format and selecting the that format in one location.

Also, it allows you to configure several templates which is impossible to do it with Mass Contact, if you want to have multiple templates, with multiple designs, you just can't do it. Mass Contact always send the same key to drupal_mail (something like mass_contact_page_mail, I don't remember) and that is the key factor to have multiple templates. Mail2all does this in a very simple way using templates with their own key.
