Search button has no effect after bundle drop down is changed

I have a content type with a relation select field.
When creating a new node of that type, I see the field, which shows field name, with selection dropdown boxes for entity type and the bundle, plus a search button.
When I select the bundle, click search , but change my mind and select another bundle, the search button does not respond any more, it does not show search results.
