Ability to send emails to !profile_name instead of !username

We wish to send our emails to users based on their first name using the profile_name field, instead of to usernames using the !username variable, so the email will say:

Dear John

and not

Dear jboy17

Is this possible? What variable should I use. I tried !profile_name and %profile_name and some other configurations, but have not been successful.
