to allow "edit own content" which covers both edit and delete.

How to NOT allow delete ??

Taxonomy Access module allows you to set permission per role for viewing, updating and deleting nodes organised by taxonomy this may achieve what you desire, If not ther are other access mosules I believe, but the one I mention is one I have used and works for me.

I have not used taxonomy and use only story and forum as the content types.
Cannot this ( ability NOT to delete post by user ) be just added to the exisiting core module somehow WITHOUT having to add overhead by adding another module ??

That said, I will like to know if you can please elaborate a little more or provide links.
