Strange character inserted before consecutive spaces

Here's a strange one. When viewing a sent email in a mail client, two consecutive spaces are preceded by a  character (capital A with a 'hat') at each occurrence. Is anyone else getting this problem? Am using tinymce, mail format is HTML. Drupal version is 4.7.5.
