I tried to use File Paths without setting the optional subdirectory, but this doesn't function. With a subdir set I have no problems.

Is this an bug or a problem with my filesystem?

I did a quick test of a Field with no File Path set and it worked as expected. When you say "doesn't function" can you specify what is/isn't happening?

A step by step guide on reproducing the issue would be greatly appreciated, as would confirming that it's an issue on a fresh site on the same or another server.

Hi,

When i leave the subdir empty and save a new node (including file) the filename is not updated according the "File name" settings, it doesn't change the filename at all.
Setting the subdir to "temp" and re-save moves the file to the subdir temp and renames the file according with the "File name" settings.
Making the subdir blank and re-save doesn't affect the file and leaves it in the subdir temp.

I've just tested, but his only occurs on my local machine which is windows based. I use this machine to test new modules.
On the live server (unix based) I don't have these problems.

I still can't confirm this issue, however recent changes have been made to this area. I'm marking this as fixed for the moment, but if you can confirm it is still an issue in the latest dev feel free to re-open the issue and provide me some detailed reproduction steps.
