Well I am tired of trying and trying and hence have to opt for this option. Here is my problem http://drupal.org/node/132801

I have tried pretty much everything but still it is not working. Though on limited budget and such a small work, I will still try to give you some $$$ (by paypal) as this whole issue is a real pain in the @$$. :-)

I've made a quick test and it seems to work for me.
Are you sure you have no url alias "friends" defined in Drupal that points nowhere ?
