I have been operating a Drupal/Ubercart store for over a year and when I set up a site membership Role, I had given it a name that I would now like to change to something more appropriate.

Can I rename a Role that has been assigned to many users without screwing things up?

Yes, it should work. Roles are stored internally by role ID and not name. As always, make a backup first just in case!
