I run Drush behind a proxy and so have to rely on using wgetrc and curlrc. If I don't have them set correctly, Drush will tell me that modules do not have a release history. But this isn't true. It just didn't receive the data correctly. So it should check the data it receives to see if it is valid release history file and if not should show a different message explaining that it was unable to reach the release history.

Does drush dl have similar poor error messages for you?

No, when I use dl it gives me parsing errors. Our firewall returns an html page that is is trying to parse. So at least I know it was due to the firewall but the error is still cryptic.
