appearance of red x boxes

I have started again with a new db and fresh drupal 5.1 install > added cck and image field modules > fine > added image, image2, image3, text2, text3 fields to story content type > fine > added stories with multiple images (and extra text) > fine.
Installed image cache module > added 2 new presets mainimage (300wide) and thumbnail (100x100) back to story type > display fields > all labels to hidden > Teaser - image to thumbnail, the rest hidden > Full all image fields to main image.
NOW the image field that are currently unused on existing and new stories appear as red x's

I desperatly need tp sort this as it is appearing on a client's real site.

it appears to have been working fine and now i have this issue. By stripping it bac to the basics I hope I have made it easier to solve

I have corrected the temp folder. Unfortunatly it is not when you add the pics that the erropr occurs. In fact if you added thre pics to every story you would never be aware of the issue.

When you add a simple story with NO pic that is when the red xs appear. I have added a couple of extre storys as an example. JUst to be clear these story dont need and never had images - so should just be text

I have progressed this and the problem goes away as long as the imagecache presets are left as default. Once you specify new presets it fails and the red xs appear
