Anyone using Media Temple Dedicated Virtual
barrysampson - April 5, 2007 - 18:14
I've seen mixed feedback on using the Media Temple gridserver option, but I'm considering going with them for a VPS.
Does anyone have any experience with this product, and/or their general service and support?
Thanks
Barry

Much better than Gridserver
We are using the dedicated virtual hosting from MediaTemple as our development environment and intend to stick with it through beta launch. I can't comment on performance in a production, high-traffic environment but it is considerably faster and more stable than the gridserver option. The performance difference between the two is like night and day which I've read stems back to a bottleneck when the gridserver communicates with mySQL and some instability in the grid configuration.
One thing I should mention, if you decide to go with the (dv) package and need to install anything in the Linux environment, make sure you make a support request to install developers tools which include many necessary utilities. It took me a couple of hours of trying to install the stuff manually to figure out that their admins have a one-click install for everything.
Here's a complete listing of tools in the developer package:

Thank you
Thanks so much for responding, and apologies for not replying to you sooner. I think you may have convinced me to give the (dv) package a whirl.
Thanks again
Barry
Do you think that mySql
Do you think that mySql bottleneck would be remedied by the new mySql GridContainer that they offer now?
How's it going?
How's it going with the VPS? I'm currently using WebIntellects and have been having trouble with segmentation faults when I try to use intensive modules (haven't been able to narrow down the specific problems)
Would love to know if your experience has been good with MediaTemple as I have several sites that I plan to migrate to the new servers.
Thanks much.
