Dear everybody,
For more fast & better development of Drupal, we can shift Drupal from PHP to Ruby on rails. We can shift the core from PHP to ruby on rails & provide a layer so that existing modules do not become redundant.
Ruby on rails 3 is definitely a better language as compared to PHP.

You've failed to state why you think Ruby is a better choice.

Additionally, it's never going to happen for various reasons.
Some off the top of my head:
-Will lose a large amount of developers in the transition, while a few may come aboard, the exodus would be incredibly devastating.
- More hosting providers provide php.
- Why spend time time porting and reinventing when that time can be used creating new features?
- Would segment/isolate the php determined sites
- Php is fine. Tons of huge sites (including Facebook with hiphop) uses php.

Please go through this link http://www.cmswire.com/cms/industry-news/php-vs-java-vs-ruby-000887.php

Also discuss the advantages of ROR with experienced programmers such as teachers at lynda.com such as Kevin Skugland & Simon Aldarice etc. They are not interested in any new project on php.
Overall in long run it may be better.

Let us know when you have a working version ready and up somewhere on git. Looking forward to discussing it further then.

(Do note that Ruby is a language, but Ruby on Rails is a framework. Mixing up those two concepts does not speak for your competency.)

I do know that rails is platform & php & ruby are languages but you have to look at the overall advantages of ROR on PHP.

We can provide Drupal in ROR also & then see which one grows faster.

yeah ok, lol-- i wish i had a $1 for every time a complete non contributor parachutes into the forums, says 'drupal would be so much better in language x' (where x is whatever the 'hot' language of the day is) and promises to rewrite it even better than before.

Seen drupal in any other languages yet?

I do agree that I am a non-contributor but I am also not a programmer. I am totally from a non IT field but I am facinated with Drupal. And I want it to be the best & lively( changing with times). Please remember good leaders may not be good managers or some managers are good at planning while others are good at executing. So, always welcome new ideas & suggestions.

I do agree that shifting to ROR is very difficult but if planned in a phased manner then it may be very fruitful in long run. If we are convinced & then if we aim then we will be able to do it. But, the first thing is whether ROR is a better option?

Ruby on Rails is new open source framework where we could develop and designe site more accurable and data will be more secure than other open source framework such as joomla, wordpress and drupal.

>> Ruby on Rails is new open source framework
>> open source framework like Joomla

Are you comparing a language with software now?

Drupal is already moving to Symfony 2.0 PHP framework in D8.

http://symfony.com/

Ruby is worse from end-user perspective: much less people know ruby than PHP and thus it will slow down Drupal development. It will kill the Drupal community. Also the migration would cause gazillion overhead and introduce interstellar bugs.

rblindore’s picture

It is good that we are moving to this framework. Then we may not need ROR. But is that framework equally good when compared with ROR?
As of no. of developers going down, I feel that in long run only the best will survive. If ROR is better than symphony then even Drupal moving to Symphony may not help in long run.

Take the developers out and you will kill the Framework. Part of Drupal success is due to its community, and the community was built around PHP.
Saying that only the best would survive is IMO quite rude. 3 years ago I was one of those that wouldn't have survived, and I find it a bit offensive for you to say that I just wasn't good enough for you to consider me useful. Mind you, I'm actually quite good in PHP and Drupal right now, and might never be the best out there, but I've tried my best to help Drupal and the community.

And, instead of shifting to ruby, why not spend the time in helping PHP improve in whatever you feel it lacks?

Porting Drupal from PHP to Ruby on Rails is similar to taking out the spirit of a human and putting back in with another one. Why not starting another project and design from bottom up using Ruby? Do you think putting PHP on Rails will do better than Ruby on Rails?

Really we expect so many from drupal and its a better step to shifting Drupal from PHP to ruby on rails........
