I am trying to customize the input of certain publication types, for example removing 'French Abstract' from journal articles, other tab. I do not have it ticked as common and I do not have it ticked as visible on the Journal Articles publication type but it is still showing up as a field to enter when submitting a Journal Article. The only change that occurs is when I tick it as common and then untick as visible in Journal Articles, it removes the title but not the box.
Am I doing something wrong or is there some functionality missing in the Drupal 7 version?

Your not doing anything wrong, that's a bug which was pointed out recently in another issue. I haven't gotten to it yet, but I will.
