I am getting in to port it to D7. Needed feature*.

* As far as I don't know any other existing alternative in D7.

Note I can't put a 7.x-1.x-dev version at topic cuz I'm not official mantainer of module.

There is a few things built into Drupal 7 and there is the Countries module http://drupal.org/project/countries that is similar to Country codes API. Check that module out and see if it has the functions that you are looking for.
