I don't know if this is a bug or if this is how the module is supposed to work, but on registration, if the process fails (for example the username already exists), the user is still subscribed to the newsletter.

Anyway, here is a patch for who wants to not subscribe the user to the newsletter list if there is an error on the registration form. The patch works with the 7.x-1.0-beta3 version.
