I have removed several of the core "optional" files from drupal. modules since i have opted not to use these. is this considered "best practice"? or is it better to keep the files in the modules directory?
the files that i removed are:
aggregator
blogapi
drupal
ping

It's probably safe, but I would be hesitant to do it unless I really needed the space.
Carefully...
I've had succcess in (i.e. no adverse reactions to) removing unused core modules... in 5.x, it tells you the following are required and will not allow you to disable:
Block - Filter - Node - System - User - Watchdog
My reasons were due to the belief that in 4.7 when visiting the module page, every module was loaded to memory. I don't know if that is true, but that's why I did it.
