total number of rows

Hello,
I would like to do simple thing. Count the total number of rows so for example I can print the total number of pictures in certain gallery. Is it possible to do this?
So far I managed only to get a list of items with a number (rownumber) assigned to them.
Even reversed order doesn't work.
