Inexpensive WebCam Recorder

kbpair - April 10, 2007 - 02:01

I would like to make it really easy for users to add video to the site. I would also like to specify limits on the video (length) and if possible I would like to put he website logo in the video.

Ideally I would have page that contained a video recorder (probably flash) that interacted with the users webcam. The recording is directly uploaded as a .flv file and displayed in another page with the Video module.

The only recorders I have found seem to require a monthly contract for their hosting services. If anybody has seen anything like this please let me know.

FLV Server Not Needed?

kbpair - April 10, 2007 - 11:27

It is my understanding that for basic playback you do not need a media server. Only if you want things like, forwarding to certain points in a video. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The only recorders I have seen require a monthly contract because the video is uploaded to their server. This might be what I need if the site is popular but for now I want to avoid that.

I think chuppo.com is the cheapest.

Flash Media Server 2

You can download the trial for FMS2, I believe it allows you to get up to 5 simultaneous connections.

No flash media server needed!

You can stream flash video from a webserver. FMS is just for fancy stuff. There is also an open source flash server called red5: http://osflash.org/red5

I think a module for this

EnekoAlonso - May 4, 2008 - 16:37

I think a module for this would be a good idea, specially if it can be done without the need of subscribing to a third party site (when hosting the videos in our server).

Either way, here are some places I have found (apparently there are a bunch of WordPress plugins for this):

etc.
