Create an initial list of distributions to populate listing page

Issue Summary

Cross-post from #1314124: [META] Improve installation profile listing on Drupal.org.

http://drupal.org/node/1085574 has an initial start, but there are probably things that should be added/removed from this list.

The initial list page of distributions could be the same list page we use now, at http://drupal.org/project/installation%20profiles

This way, we keep the metrics and UI consistent with what we show for modules and themes, and any improvements to the usage metrics for one area can (hopefully) cascade into other areas as well.

Various handbook pages have some great info, and the maintenance of these should probably remain a manual thing. I'll try and do a review of the existing documentation to see if there are areas that can be consolidated/cleaned up.

Keeping the handbook pages intact - along side the list page - would provide a way to ensure that people got good usage stats on the more popular distributions and that new distributions/distributions from smaller shops/distributions for a niche vertical didn't get lost in the shuffle.

It could be, but see #1205640: Implementation and criteria to differentiate user-focused distributions or products from other distributions for why I strongly believe that we should separate out "Drupal Products" or whatever you want to call things like VoiceBox, Commons, and Open Atrium, and "Kickstarters" like Drupal.org testing profile, Commerce Kickstart, and Multilingual Drupal.

If we're trying to position distributions as an alternative to Drupal core to start building your site from if you're trying to solve actual, real-world problems, there's incredible value in separating these two things from each other, particularly for new users.

I'm calling those things "Distributions", and the collection of modules and themes and stuff "Installation profiles." But maybe we need another name.

Tagging.

I was thinking along similar lines - it gets confusing because we use "Install profile" to describe both a thing and a process.

I opened an issue for this: #1353610: Improve documentation to clarify the different meanings of "Install profile"

Hopefully, clarifying the terms will help create the needed distinction between these concepts, which will help clarify information architecture, which could improve the UX.

This is 100% bureaucracy, blocks natural evolution, and is pure elitism.

Why don't you directly go ahead and ask for money to get on that list?

I'd won't fix this issue to save everyone's time, but I'll let you figure it out yourself.

Aside from that, this issue is stuck on the artificial and invalid separation of distributions and profiles, and how to name them; hence postponing.

sun, please catch up on the discussions at #1314124: [META] Improve installation profile listing on Drupal.org and #1357806: Decide a name for user-focused distributions/products which both have broad consensus and buy-in by the larger community.

1) There is no bureaucracy here. It will be a simple radio button selection on the project edit page that any distribution author can make. This issue is simply about populating the initial list. If we miss a few projects (which we will), they can edit their projects and add themselves to the list as well.

2) It's no longer a distinction between "install profiles" and "distributions". The distinction is between "distributions" and "full-featured distributions." The word "product" was problematic for some folks, so we went this route instead.

Create an initial list of distributions to populate listing page

An important help especially for this issue, IMO, would be #1421972: Usage statistics for distributions

#8

Issue tags:+distributions

Adding a documentation tag for distributions.

#9

Issue tags:+valid issue

tagging the Distributions issues so the issue triage avoids closing this issue

#10

The issue in comment #7, especially significant for the distribution listing discussed here, just fixed with the new handbook page Usage statistics for distributions. That is, distributions have usage statistics available, and the docs now explain how, thanks to dww.
