One resource for automatically formatting documentation to create tables of contents and 'external resource' lists, is through a site called Beautify My Docs.com. You can easily:

  • Convert between HTML and Markdown
  • Generate a table of contents based on a particular header level
  • Generate a list of references to other pages and web sites
  • Unify common formatting conventions

The site is free is was built by Chris Shattuck in order to produce high-quality documentation for the Open Atrium and Managing News documentation projects
