Hi brilliant people
So I'm OK with site development, and now I'm trying to learn theming.
I created a Zen sub-theme. I have done nothing to it other than the simple basic steps to create a sub-theme, as described on the Zen theme site. I have repeated the sub-theme creation process several times, and even downloaded the Zen theme a second time.
When I use the sub-theme I have created, it squishes the title, main menu, and the content all together. It also puts the site name and slogan beside the logo, rather than under it with as with Zen. Please see images below for clarification. I have done little else to the site, other than create a content type, a view, and a little content.
I almost forgot to mention, there's also something weird with a big black bar in the administration pages (still Seven), as illustrated in this image.
If someone can please take a quick look and let me know what may have done wrong, I would appreciate it.
Thanks, Jim

hard to tell ...
Hi Jim:
1. Zen sub themeing is a good way to go. I assume you're reading the instructions ..
2. Your zen sub theme picture is missing the Main Menu items, which is why the label Main Menu is squished with Home (i.e. I suspect it's a bigger problem).
3. Zen's use of css for layout is initially a bit weird, but for good reason, and well tested. So take some time to read their documentation, and you have to know that unless you're going to learn about css, then it's probably not worth doing.
4. If you post links to the pictures of your sub theme, there's only so much guessing we can do, we'd need you to post to a real page to have any better insight. Using firebug or chromium to look at the css is a sine qua non of any themeing exercise.
Thanks ...
... for the comment. I have reinstalled Zen, and reconstructed the subtheme more than a few times, without altering any of the CSS at all. And I still get the problem, which suggests to me it's not a CSS problem.
I left it with the new sub theme on my server if you'd care to check it out. I really appreciate the help, I'm worried that I'm going to ask the people who manage the server to re-install Drupal.
