Been trying for a couple of weeks now to get something similar to this to work for a taxonomy-based image gallery (with sub galleries) with Views 3 in D7 with no luck!

Is there any likelihood for this to be ported to D7?

It's not something I have time to work on. I'd happily add a co-maintainer to this or review patches though :)
