The module help text says "Remember for a discount like 'buy 4 get 1 free' the qualifying amount is '5'. " but this is extremely confusing and the way the module works completely nixes any "Buy X get Y free" promotions. Reasoning below:

If there is a "buy 4 get 1 free" deal on my site then I expect when I add 4 of a particular product to my cart, I get a 5th one for free (buy 4 get 1 free = 5 products). The qualifying amount for "Buy 4 get 1 free" is therefore FOUR. It is NOT 5. By making it 5, the customer has to add 5 products to his cart when the offer is telling him he only needs to add 4.

I suppose this is down to an interpretation of B4G1F. Does it mean you pay for 4 and get a 5th free? Or does it mean you buy 4 but only pay for 3? The module works with the latter scenario, but the qualifying amount should still be 4 - not 5 here.

The module assumes "buy four, get one free" means "buy four, get a fifth one free". Which is logical, as you're paying for four: you're buying four.

This is the usual meaning: consider "Buy one, get one free" as a test case for the logic:

  • If you add one item to your cart, you have to pay for it: one does not quality for a discount.
  • If you add two items to the cart, you get the second one free: two does qualify for a discount.

The alternative meaning would mean that "buy one, get one free" was equivalent to giving away the item for free.

BTW, how would one program a BOGO to work on more than 2? If I set "maximum applications" to "unlimited", with a qualifying amount of 2 and discount amount of 1, it applies the discount TWICE (once for each item, discounting them both). What would I need to do to have every other item be discounted (the understood meaning of BOGO)?

I have a similar need, but client wants to offer discount each time customer buys 8. So it is buy 7, get one free basically, and then needs to repeat for 16, 24, 32, etc.

This issue had the answers and patch I was looking for (#16), so I can now use "buy 7 get 1 free" in multiples of 8.
