Have you thought about changing to the PMC Block Cipher? PMC has higher encryption and it is supposed to be much faster. See http://www.pmc-ciphers.com/technology/pmc_fact_sheet.pdf. I don't know whether it is proprietary or not. If it is then at least upgrade the encryption to AES 512.

Hey Peter, and thanks for your input. I don't think I can do what you're asking though, because I'm using PHP's mcrypt extension for this module, and it seems like mcrypt doesn't support PMC, and as far as I know there's no 512 bit version of the Rijndael/AES cipher either.

I could very well be wrong though, I'm definitely no encryption expert.
