There must be something I'm not understanding about widgets.

I see the widgets tab, but I don't see how to turn them on and how to specify which widgets to use. So far, I'm seeing other services but no widgets.

Hmm I don't know about the D6 version. But in D7 in the service links config page (admin/config/services/service-links) there is a second tab called 'services' (admin/config/services/service-links/services)

That is where you can enable and re-order the widgets.
Finally, there is a third tab 'widgets' (admin/config/services/service-links/widgets) where you can configure the widgets.
