I spent 2 weeks reading Drupal's forums and handbooks and others comments all over the web. I successfully installed XAMPP and have tried to install Druple 5.1 The various user comments on how to set up drupal in XAMPP relate to version 4.7 and mostly to older versions of Windows. The details on the sequence of things to do to get drupal to work aren't congruent with what I'm seeing in the files and folders on my computer. Some files referred to simply do not exist.
I'm beginning to think either XAMPP or Drupal or both ar not compatible with Windoows Vista and I wonder if any one else has succeeded. (I have Vista Home Premium on a desktop.)
Thanks

Xamp and Windows Vista
I have WAMP set up and working on Windows Vista. I use it for testing sites before I put them uo on a host. I assume that the same should be true for you. Just set to port to something safe for your system, other than the standard Port 80.

Thanks but WAMP is so much more difficult than XAMPP.
I've worked out XAMPP is not the problem it's my trying to work out from the drupal guidelines how to make it work with XAMPP -- or anything ...

never used WAMP/XAMPP
I prefer to install each technology individually. You learn more that way anyway!
