After successfully placing an order using authorize.net payment gateway, the new transaction will show its workflow status as 'transaction received'.
Is this the expected wf status? Shouldn't it be 'completed' ?

This is the correct response. In the case where you are selling real, physical products the transaction should only be "completed" when the items has been shipped (not just when payment is complete).

Ok, in this case the site is selling non-shipable products, e.g. posting credits, site´s membership, there should be no need to manually edit transaction wf status, any special consideration when defining this kind of products?
