I like the way LinkedIn presents Forums and Forum topics. With "Browse" on the left and "Questions" on the right.

Has something like this been developed in Drupal for the forum module?

My quick shot:
- the block is a list of sub forums so you can deal with it using some of the taxonomy* module to display the list of the terms/forums under the root of forum
- the posts are displayed with a little theming in it.
