image_exact to imagecache

I have been using image-exact on my 4.7.6 site to make the thumbnails in my image galleries square. I'm planning to update my site to 5.1, and see that imagecache is supposedly the way to achieve the same effects in 5.1.
Can you help me on how to achieve the same effects as image_exact with imagecache? I'm lost.

Still need a little push
I have installed the imagecache-module and created the namespace I need, and it creates the type of thumbnails I want. But I am still completely lost as to what to do next in order to get these thumbnails to display automatically, instead of the ones normally generated by the image-module in my galleries??
As far as I can tell I need to make some code in a template.php to override the normal function??
