On my installation of the theme IE8 fails to render the correct font for the testimonial region. See attached screenshot.

Your demo site does render correctly however.

What I am I doing wrong?

Please check there is any JavaScript error in recent logs, because font using cufon. i have checked with multi browser and not encountered the error. which jquery version you are using?

I am using 6.x-2.0-alpha1 for JQuery Update - according to the documentation that should give me jQuery 1.3.2.

I couldn't see any javascript errors.

I have fixed it. I did a fresh install and it works fine now. I suspect I had some sort of conflict going on.
