if you are willing to put in the time to learn how the modules work, which ones do what task, and how to manipulate them, the answer is yes. If you want it up and running and competing with myspace.com right out of the box and in 1/2 an hour, no.
Thanks for the reply. Sadly
Thanks for the reply. Sadly I have zero coding experience so I would need something easy. I was thinking something like a module that drupal might have and I could work it that way.
There is module and you can do it
I guess you can do without any coding experience too :)
Just download the latest 4.7x or latest 5x drupal and the following modules :
guestbook ( equivalent to comments on profile or scraps )
invite ( allows to become member by invitation only )
OG ( gives you groups or communities )
cck ( let you make any type of content )
private message ( and chat, if you want )
With cck you can create a content type for OG only so that they appear on the homepages of OG
just like a group forum or blog .
By default drupal has blogs for every individual user.
You can use image and inline module to have a decent general purpose gallery and you can use video module for video.
To activate modules activate them from admin > modules as well as from admin > access control
you should grant access to your users.
You can do it within one or two days, and if you want further customisation you can use "views" module ( more suited on vps or semi-deds ) .............. and from the second or third day you can have a site MUCH better than myspace and FAR FAR better than phpfox or dzoic or alicia. :)
Best regards

How can I contact you? I need some help with a social networking site.
......
I am not an expert :( BUT feel free to ask whatever questions you have directly here :)
<3 misty. Since you
<3 misty. Since you mentioned phpfox, dzoic and alicia, I guess you know how sexy Alicia looks. Its tempting to just use that. I will give things a try this week after I get my SSH working on my server. Will I be able to copy the look of Alicia or have it somewhat similar? I really love how that engine looks. Drupal seems really cool so I will give it a try.
I don't want to get ahead of myself but are there other forums working with drupal? phpbb2 etc..
.....
Yes, at first look Alicia looks cool. But there are too many sites with the same look and theme options for alicia are far less than drupal. Alicia core is not very feature rich and for most modules you have topay $$. Featurewise it lacks "Groups" or "Clubs" unless the have made a module by this time.
Drupal has OG module which offers excellent "Groups" / "Communities" feature alongwith event module.
I guess there are forum integrations like vbulletin available with drupal though the core forum is cool too, and you can make it cooler :) with views module.
Best regards
project
I would like to give you soem project details then you can maybe giv an input. Have you activated your contact?
I need help installing drupal 5.1
I am very new too this. I do not have a any coding experience, but I am trying to teach myself PHP.
Any advice on the best way to do this?
My goal is to create a myspace like sight for a small community in Drupal. Due to my lack of experince, can someone please tell me what I need to down load. I tried Misty3's recommendation, and downloaded drupal 5.1, but I was unable to make it work. Do I need to download PHP and MYSQL first in order for drupal modules to work? Can I do this with windows xp home edition or will I need IIS that comes wiht the pro copy?
Thanks.
If you just wanna play with
If you just wanna play with Drupal a bit, you can get Drupal hosting from someone which I believe is typically $5/month. I was thinking to provide it myself:
http://www.turnkeycompanies.co.uk/webdesign
but still have doubts whether it's worth it or not. In your case, you would probably need to have shell & FTP access to enable you to develop your own site.
where are these modules?
I go to modules in admin and the modules you mentioned are not there...where do i get these?
=-=
in the downloads area of drupal.org using the download tab at the top of every page of drupal.org.
you can..
you can..it does require a bit of work. though.
Have a look at http://www.projectopus.com which is a myspace type site (but better IMHO) and based on Drupal. The talented guys who created that site have made their Drupal tweaks available to everyone. searching for 'projectopus' on drupal.or might help give you an idea to how complex/simple that work might be for you.
If you're familiar with myspace and tweaking HTML pages on there, you won't find Drupal a lot more complex, although you will need to dig in a little to get to a projectopus.com stage.
best of luck
Phil
...
Wow that sites looks so nice.
Mysti, I got my test site installed and I have been playing with it XD. Right now I have few problems, maybe you can point me in the right direction <3
I love the Alicia profiles that you can see here http://demo.phpizabi.net/?L=users.profile&id=1913 Is there a module I can use that will make my profiles more sexy like Alicia? ^_^
I installed all the modules you suggested and a few other ones. So far things are cool and I'm happy with it :)
My other problem was, that my site has that ugly postnuke layout. You know left column, centre content and a right column :( The last module I installed was views, perhaps I can move things around with it?? The http://www.projectopus.com website has a beautiful layout and doesn't have what I call the posnuke layout feel.
Thanks for you help Mysti and everyone else also xD

There is no module that will theme profiles, or theme your overall drupal install.
Here is where a little coding will come into play with regrads to page layout. The handbook has quite afew recipes you can try out in the customizing and themeing area.
specifically : http://drupal.org/node/45471
and more specifically : http://drupal.org/node/35728
if you are using Drupal 5 with the default garland theme, you may want to try this specific snippet first http://drupal.org/node/35728#comment-206945
Hi netranger,great to know
Hi netranger,
great to know that you have started.
I had Alicia on my system - I agree it is cool but the thing I do not like about their mode of profile display is the long list of descriptive items, very few visitors are interested in those, and they also have same photo repeated twice in different sizes. More importantly all sites look so same ....
I hope verymisunderstood's links already helped you ; you can also see, what in my opinion is very nice, profile display template here http://dev.couleeregiononline.com/users/superadmin/profile
and ask about the details here http://drupal.org/node/136457.
( I forgot to mention buddylist module but probably you have installed that already )
Yes there can be interesting things done to profile page with Views module too, eg. creating a block of friends thumbnail to get displayed on the profile page.
Best regards
Hey guys
Ok so I've been installing modules and I'm trying to figure them out >.< I used one of the scripts that was posted in the link above to edit my profiles. For the data fields, I used the Profile core module. I would like to get everything installed and working then try to figure out how things work.
That page profile you posted misty is really cool. This one http://tranceplanet.org/zoki (http://drupal.org/node/133350) is my favorite one. I love those profiles ^_^ He says that he used imagenodes and usernodes for the gallery, but I have no clue how usernodes works lol.
You can view how my site looks right now (don't laugh lol) http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/1219/clipboard04ki4.jpg
That is the user profiles with the small CSS script I used. Don't look right but all I got lol.
I do have some small questions for you guys today, maybe you can help :D
1) I enabled pictures for users and their profiles. I set the dimensions to 100x100 but it don't show them that large. It resizes their image all the time.
2) I used the 'Recent Blog Post' block that you can see here: http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/8050/clipboard01fe7.jpg It shows the blog title but it don't say who posted it. I would love to show the user who created the blog and even show their picture.
....
>> 1) Is it so ? Are you doing it at the right place ? It works for me.
>> 2) You can show photo of who posted the blogs ( and etc etc thereof ) by views.
If you have installed views and views ui, and activated them via modules, and granted access via access control, then you can click on the import tab of views :
and copy paste the following to get a cool recent bloggers page.
* do not use opening and closing php tags *
Best regards

That was sweet, thanks mist.
saving for reference,
much obliged Misti
There is a free one available
There is a free service available for private group oriented sites, like families or friends. Each site is independent of one another and a member can belong to more than one -- like their family site and a site for the Mom's Club or Golf Club.
Features include blog, pictures, calendar, video, chat and more! And it's great cause you can chose which sites to post your entry to and the general public cannot see it. So you get privacy and security as well.
I just recently relaunched it under Drupal 5.1 and am very pleased with the new version (it actually has been live for a year now.)
Please let me know what you think and feel free to get your free family site!
