I am a complete newbie to site development having developed static sites (2) and only with wysiwyg devloper offered by my hosting company. My newest project is a community oriented site with hundreds of pages and the need to have a database backing it. Is Drupal a good choice for a newbie? Can I learn to use it effectively while I am still middle aged?

I'm a newbie too and it is good for me
Tiptrace-
I'm a fairly early newbie myself and am in my mid 30's. I started dabbling in Drupal shortly after 5.0 came out. I had no PHP experience but I had designed my own websites using html (no wyswyg editors for the most part) and I grew up programming a little bit in basic, pearl, and C++ in my youth. (I haven't really done any major programming since college in my early 20's.)
I picked up a few PHP books and have been learning and soaking in as much drupal as I can in my spare hours. I'm also learning CSS. They seem to go hand in hand. I haven't touched Mysql yet.
I'd say I'm no where near proficient, but I'm getting there. I haven't studied this stuff 24-7 or any where near that. I'm dabbling. The Drupal Dojo has been great help. There are a lot of resources to sponge off information and just opening up the files and seeing what they do has taught me quite a bit.
So, I think someone with limited experience can get Drupal up and running. It sounds like it is perfect for what you want to do. Perhaps someone with more experience can give you an idea of what would be involved.
Drupal is great for new users too !
I am also new in this field but I have developed a quite good website called http://100rupees.com using drupal, so you can easily handle drupal. If you have any problem regarding drupal, you can always find its solutions on drupal forums.. Wish you best of luck for new website powered by Drupal.
