Ok so I'm trying to understand what this module actually is trying to do. My guess is this module was supposed to add a jcarousel pager. The problem was in the 2.x version of views slideshow there was no easy way to do only that. But in 3.x this is much easier. I don't think in the latest version of this module it should do anything with the main area at all only add pager controls. Attached is a module for 6.x that will do just that. I don't want to release it as I think it should be part of this module. It should be simple enough to port it to 7.x
If you also want to add a jcarousel slideshow option that would be great too, but the name of this module suggests it makes changes to the pager.

redndahead commentedJust in case people don't know the terms here is an image to show what I mean by slideshow and pager with a fairly normal type of slideshow. I'm an artist ain't I? ;)

jjclint commentedYeps that's what the module is trying to do, well actually is doing. say you have a single frame views slide show with a pager of 12 thumbnail images from which you only want to show 4 at a time and scroll for the rest - no need to get into further details as I'm sure you know what jcarousel does.
This functionality is quite useful, especially for online video sites and such (look at these thieving bastards for example www.sidereel.com).
I've been using a patched version of views slideshow jcarousel thumbnails module on a drupal 7.10 install and it works fine. Although performance wise it's a bit heavy on page loading times, but I'm assuming that has to do with the extra jscript running for the jcarousel on top of the views slide show one.
You say that this can be easily achieved with views sildeshow 3.x can you elaborate further - I'm guessing you meant writing a new plugin module like the one you attached is easy, but I'm not a 100% sure.
How is the module you attached differs from the one we discussing here?

redndahead commentedThe current version seems to create a new version of views slideshow cycle that has some thumb support.
Instead of doing that my version let's you use vews slideshow cycle for the slideshow and when you enable the pager widget you have jcarousel as a choice for the type of pager.

jjclint commented@redndahead Oh well why didn't you say so :)
That does sound like a different solution. IMOP you'r approach seems to be better the carousel functionality should be an extra option limited to the scope of the pager, it feels wrong to tamper with the main cycle plugin to achieve this.
I think your plugin should be ported for drupal 7 as well - I can test run it.
Having this option further expands Views slideshow and turns it from an awesome module to an uber awesome module. It seems like videos are a big part of the online present and it's only getting bigger and bigger. Another testament for the need of this functionality are the long discussions on Views Slideshow JCarousel Thumbs on the issue pages and the fact it has a pretty good usage statistics for a sub-module that wasn't really heavily maintained.

imclean commentedThis sounds like a cleaner approach. A couple of things:
1. A use case for having both the jCarousel thumbs and a pager would to show progress through a slideshow. I often use the pager hovering over the main image to indicate which slide is being displayed. This is particularly helpful when you've been scrolling through many thumbnails and aren't sure how far you've gone. Could we have multiple pagers?
2. Would this mean it could (or should) work with plugins other than jQuery Cycle?
redndahead commented1) you can have both , but the problem at the moment is you can only have 2 pagers at a time. This is mainly a limitation caused by the settings ui. So one would have to be the top pager and the other would be the bottom pager.
2) Yes it does. It should work with anything that implements the views slideshow api

jjclint commentedSo redndahead what do you see as the next move regarding all this?

fearlsgroove commentedThe original purpose of this module was a tweak of the thumbnail hover plugin that would use jcarousel as a pager. It sounds like the new architecture of the current version of VSS makes that a lot simpler, so I'd agree a rewrite is in order.
I tried out the module you posted and works like a charm. It even syncs the jcarousel and the slideshow. I even like the name better, since this really has nothing to do with the old thumbnail hover approach, so I'd prefer to create a new project namespace for it and deprecate this module except for views 6.x-1.x. Given that, and since it's your code , do you want to just create the project yourself? If not I will.
I don't necessarily think a jcarousel version of the main slideshow is in order since that's done quite well in Jcarousel.

redndahead commentedSo I think I would prefer that you start the module. If you need co-maintainers I think that there will be people who will step up.
We still need a jcarousel version of the slideshow the reason is the newest version let's us mix and match widgets with the slideshow. That said I'm not sure where this belongs. Maybe we can talk to quicksketch and get this somehow integrated into jcarousel module. Or a submodule within it. Or maybe there is a better way to integrate this module and jcarousel so not as much has to be written, but I'm not sure.
If you start a new project I would call it views_slideshow_jcarousel. I can help you port it from there.
