Paid memberships - need advice on modules

Hi!
I'm helping a cultural organization to move their offline based member management system to their (new) drupal website.

They have 2 different types of members and both roles pay fees that help support the organization.
These two roles will have access to a very small part of the content no one else has (mainly the meetings' minutes) but the main idea behind this move is to free the administration of member management tasks.

So I'm looking for a module (or module combo) that will enforce renewable/recurring paid memberships, allow new users to register as a supporting member by paying the fee and (if possible) email users when it's time to renew their membership.

The best thing I've seen so far is the ecommerce module which seems a bit overkill and lm_paypal module which seems pretty fit for the job but it's still in development and there's no stable version yet.

Can any of you give me any advice?
