After upgrading to drupal 7.2, enabled Pathauto, then,

1. configured URL aliases settings as follows:

Administration » Configuration » Search and metadata » URL aliases
Verbose
Separator -
Leave case the same as source token values.

Maximum alias length 100
Maximum component length 100
Update action
Do nothing. Leave the old alias intact.

and, 2. URL aliases pattern made all null.

As the result, content URL made something like

mysite.com/content/[title]

But when I click on the link (mysite.com/content/[title]), that corresponding piece of content would not appear.

Were aliases working before? Sometimes people have trouble owing to not having mod_rewrite enabled (assuming you are using Apache). If manually created aliases (not using pathauto) are working, it is puzzling. Check whether manually created aliases are working.
