Release schedule and functionality of this module?

I was just sniffing around and became interested in what this module might become. So far there is no release, when will there be one?

I happen to be very interesed in using esi + varnish for mass scaling Drupal + authenticated users. Is this module trying to accomplish something similar with redis + ssi + nginx? (I also have heard great things about using redis for scaling sites..)
